What is Hypnotherapy?

If you are new to hypnosis, it is understandable if you have some uncertainty about what hypnosis is and how it may work for you. First, I need to address what hypnotherapy is not, it is not magic or the stage hypnosis you see on TV and in shows whilst you are on your holidays. I will not be making you dance around the therapy room as a chicken.

Hypnosis is said to be a focused state of attention. You usually have your eyes closed and are sat in a relaxed position. You will then simply listen to what I am saying to you. Research has shown that when you are relaxed, you become more susceptible to suggestions which are being delivered.

For instance, if I ask you to visualise that you are laid on a beach somewhere warm, and that you can hear the sound of the waves and that with every wave meeting the shore you feel more and more relaxed. Generally speaking, you will be able to visualise this, and you will feel relaxed as a result.

If you come to see me about anxieties that you are experiencing, I may ask you to imagine yourself in the future feeling calmer and dealing with that anxiety, focusing on how amazing it feels to finally manage your anxieties. Chances are that you will feel more confident in yourself and your abilities to regulate your inner feelings.

In hypnotherapy, you can start to use this focused state of attention to help you to create a feeling of positivity. You are able to re-process your way of thinking and therefore will be able to manage the things with which life throws at you in a more relaxed, positive way.

You are aware of everything that is going on because this is a process of creating awareness and resilience in areas that used to be a problem.

You will not take on any suggestion which does not fit with your morals and values so you can be confident in knowing that you will take on the positive influences througout our time together.
